Domain Tutorial
If you are looking to expand past myspace or freewebs, there are two ways to do it. Domain
and Sub-Domain. An example of a domain is yourname.com. An example of a sub-domain is
yourname.othersite.com. Read below for tips on how to get hosted and find a domain.SUB-DOMAIN/DOMAIN
1. The first thing to do when looking for a sub-domain is to find many different sites, and look at their rules and what they offer for a sub-domain hostee. Make sure they give you enough space for your site, and that they are willing to help you if you need it.
2. Gather a bunch of your work together, because most likely the site will ask you to show them some of it. Don't just show them lots of one type of thing, show them a little bit of everything so they know you are diverse.
3. Download an FTP progam; a widely used one is called Smart FTP. There are many many tutorials out there on how to use it, and is fairly simple once you get it. This is what you will use to upload things onto your site. Another program you will need is notepad, or some sort of word processor for you to type your html.
4. ALWAYS USE YOUR OWN CODES; nothing is worse than someone coming to you and telling you that you stole their code. It is not worth it, and you learn a lot by doing it yourself.
5. Be nice to your host. Don't come to them every 2 1/2 seconds asking for more of this or help with this - it gets annoying to them.
6. A domain costs real money, so first make sure you have that! Find a good hosting site, that is cheap, but gives you what you need. A good one is 1and1.com. Keep up on your monthly payments or your site will be shut down.
CONTENT/BLOGGING
1. Offer lots of content, that can be given to a wide variety of users. Target more than one audience, such as other website owners or normal people surfing the web. Have a little bit (or a lotta bit) of everything, but you can obviously have more of the things you are good at.
2. When blogging, use proper grammar. People will stop reading when they can't understand where a sentence starts or stops. d0n't TyP3 LiiK dy$$, sorry but that is not english and nobody knows what it means.
3. Keep your subjects interesting. Talk about things that are important to you, and give your opinion on things so you can ask what everyone elses opinions are - this will bring you more comments. Don't just ramble on about the dreamy boy in your science class that you couldn't stop thinking about or how you and your friend are fighting about the name for your cat. People don't want to read things like that.
LAST BUT NOT LEAST, make it your own! Keep it creative, let your ideas flow!
